I would have given it a much lower mark, if it weren't for the reclamation of Hareton at the end. That saved this from being awful. There are a number of books I didn't like, that I think I will give a reread to someday...not this.Josephhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00466108789532345790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-341752236357006509.post-83169899217658175972017-04-06T11:38:21.007-04:002017-04-06T11:38:21.007-04:00Finally finished this one, and I must say, you are...Finally finished this one, and I must say, you are quite polite in your review. I won't be. I loathe this story so much that I cannot even give proper credit to the writing style. I couldn't care less.

I agree that this was NOT a love story, but a story of revenge. Wow! Sin abounds. HC is evil. This is a story of sick, wicked evil revenge. (And that Joseph - - toward the end, I gave up trying to translate his mumble.)

This whole story made my stomach turn; I cannot even think straight. It was awful. I almost skipped the ending, but barely dragged myself to the finish line.

Pls forgive me for dumping on your post; this is my first opportunity to write about my feelings. I'll get it all out later when I write a blog post. I actually read yours before writing mine while I was trying to sort out my thoughts on the novel and it really helped me so thanks. :)
I love your comparison of Edmond and Heathcliff. I read The Count of Monte Cristo years ago so my memory isn't perfect on that account but I think I would agree with you. :) Lois Tinúvielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01113667315479652015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-341752236357006509.post-62716248563217122022015-01-18T19:54:41.168-05:002015-01-18T19:54:41.168-05:00Thanks for the feedback Tonia. Thanks for the feedback Tonia.Josephhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00466108789532345790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-341752236357006509.post-29070421289138499742015-01-18T19:53:46.684-05:002015-01-18T19:53:46.684-05:00Thanks for the feedback. Thanks for the feedback.Josephhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00466108789532345790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-341752236357006509.post-90800981427170541452015-01-18T18:12:42.053-05:002015-01-18T18:12:42.053-05:00Great analysis - I especially like your comparison...Great analysis - I especially like your comparison to The Count of Monte Cristo. Two stories about revenge but oh so different.

I had not thought about Hareton in that light before - great summation of his story. I agree that it is a tale of revenge--but not one that resonated for me, largely because as you point out, the reaction of Heathcliff is out of all proportion. But I hated it. I absolutely dislike the writing style. I find it choppy and un-elevating. I have never understood why people consider the 'romance' between Heathcliff and Catherine one of the greatest love stories - two such selfish, self-centred, horrific people! This book makes me shudder with distaste.

So many people have told me I SHOULD read it. But you know what, I can't. I've kept it on my shelf all these years, trying valiantly to open it every now and then to read it right through. But two years ago I decided I wasn't going to give it another chance. I'm done with it. It is over. Finished.

On the other hand The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favourites, and I have read it oh so many times! I was at first surprised that you brought up Edmond Dante... but you make a really good comparison. Another comparison to make would be to that of Fanny Price and the entire idea of nature versus nurture. I feel like the last time I read it (or Pride and Prejudice) I compared Darcy and Heathcliff. There's so much in this little novel that every time I re-read it I find something new.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-341752236357006509.post-80776265518813144352014-11-15T21:15:26.238-05:002014-11-15T21:15:26.238-05:00I haven't read any of the Brontës yet, but I&#...I haven't read any of the Brontës yet, but I'll maybe start with Jane Eyre.

I like what you're doing here, working your way through a Greatest Book list. The writing was very immature, which isn't surprising as Emily was quite sheltered; her sister Charlotte reveals this with her comments on WH. The characters were manipulated to drive the plot which = unbelievable. I didn't hate the novel but I wish she'd had 50 more years to hone her craft.
Cleohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13152128642971612433noreply@blogger.com
