This is how I feel about Steinbeck, precisely.

Having said that...he makes one think, even if the conclusion is one of disagreement. But I also consider what kind of world Steinbeck grew up. It probably would be a good place to start since I have also lost my patience with him. In fact, my architect professor taught his students to also wonder and then figure out WHY someone is the way that he is (as opposed to just writing him off). It is a good piece of advice and it helps one to be empathetic. However, still...people are still fully responsible for their actions and behaviors and novellas.

Anyway, this would be so difficult to write about, and I believe you did an excellent job. I do have this on a TBRR (re-read) list somewhere.Ruth @ with freedom and bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15531827758868215023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-341752236357006509.post-14589142545340572732016-03-14T17:28:04.146-04:002016-03-14T17:28:04.146-04:00Most people love or hate this one. But I really should read more of him because he's a fantastic author. Steinbeck creates characters, puts them in a hopeless situation, finagles events so they have zero options, and then stands in judgement of anyone who says they did something wrong. He feels sly and manipulative to me, and I've pretty well lost patience with him.

However, I do feel sad for George and Lennie. Not their fault their author was a big meanie.Hamlette (Rachel)https://www.blogger.com/profile/11961916847426233995noreply@blogger.com
