I am not sure when I will read it again, but I will someday.

On the Eagles: they go back a long way in Tolkien's work; for example, they rescued Beren & Luthien at one point. So it is hard to attribute specific political relevance to them since they were part of his work (in some form) for decades. Also I think that for Tolkien, allegory has to be intentional; that is what distinguishes it from symbolism. (He talks about this in the Foreword.)

On The Silmarillion: I really love it but it is very different from LotR. I don't necessarily expect everyone to like it, but I am curious about your reaction if you get a chance to read it.Beth https://www.blogger.com/profile/00181538167994145152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-341752236357006509.post-33317361180435412722015-02-14T15:44:39.629-05:002015-02-14T15:44:39.629-05:00It's the texture -- too many little grainy bit...It's the texture -- too many little grainy bits -- and how dry they are. Mostly I just hate baked potatoes, and badly prepared mashed potatoes. And really thick french fries that are full of dry potato-ness. A false Tolkien fan? Whatever, I'm just kidding around :-) I'm definitely not a Tolkien snob, hee.

I'm sorry to hear you weren't that impressed by Five Armies. I don't love this trilogy like I love the LOTR movies, but I thought it was quite good. I get great joy from the character development for both Bilbo and Thorin over the course of all three movies in particular. But... no one can like everything! It was better than the second Hobbit film, but I'm still disappointed overall. I can scarcely believe it was done by the same crowd as LOTR. I enjoy reading Tolkien, and am awed by the minute details of his world-building. However, I would never trash Harry Potter. I think Rowling has done an amazing job with her world-building as well. To be honest, I think comparing Middle-Earth and the world of Harry Potter is like comparing apples and oranges! I agree with you on Jackson's movies, but I will say he has taken a little heat on the Faramir issue and his attempts to explain it away were paltry at best. I remember one thing he said was he didn't believe anyone could resist the ring. While he has a wonderful job with the movies, this completely and utterly misses the point of Faramir.
