Personally, I could never see completely eye to eye with the claims that Jim was portrayed in an outright racist way – he's the only adult in Huck's life who has decent values and isn't either violent or dishonest! He comes out of hiding to save a life even though he knows it will probably mean imprisonment for him. The injustice and innocence that forms the hub of the book, reminded me of To Kill A Mockingbird. Like Lee, Twain highlights many social issues and concerns of his time through the eyes of a child.

I will have to get onto Don Quixote so that I appreciate your reference too :-)
Bronahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11110584237325026052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-341752236357006509.post-43705432832709849482014-06-15T15:04:46.823-04:002014-06-15T15:04:46.823-04:00Thank you Fariba. Reading your review makes me want to reread them; but, like you, too, I've got other stuff lined up that I have to get through first.

Anyway, the Don Quixote similarity was perfect. Twain did that on purpose.

Enjoy Anna Karenina and Gone With the Wind. Ruth @ with freedom and bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15531827758868215023noreply@blogger.com
