July 7: Top Ten Hyped Books I've Never Read
(I seem to remember a similar TTT, about Top 10 OVER-hyped books. Assuming this is different – meaning, I intend to read these one day.)

The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Tom Jones by Henry Fielding
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
War and Peace by Tolstoy
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

  1. Oooh! Good list! I've read a bunch of these (1, 3, 6, 8, and 10), and all of the others except The Stand are on my to-read list.

    1. Come on...break outta your comfort zone. One creepy S.K. novel won't hurt ya ;-)

    2. I really love Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. I've read the whole thing twice and parts of it many more times. And I loved his writing style when he was doing a column for Entertainment Weekly. But I don't deal well with horror and creepiness -- my imagination is very vivid, and things that I've seen or read will sneak back up on me and bother me a lot, even years later. I watched a handful of horror movies in college, and fifteen years later, certain things from them can still freak me out if I let them. So I don't really read horror.

However. I felt very snobby having never read any of Stephen King's novels, especially since I like his non-fiction writing so well. So I read Salem's Lot because vampires are the one horror subject I can handle. (I'm a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, so familiarity with vampires breeds a certain contemptuous fearlessness). And Salem's Lot convinced me that nope, don't need to read any of his other horror novels, they will freak me out way too much. Don't need it in my head.

    3. Can't say that I blame you then. Actually there was no blame to start with, just tongue in cheek. I trust you know that. Cheers.

    4. Oh, I didn't feel any blame :-) Just... felt like explaining why I like Stephen King's writing and don't read his books, lol.

  4. I've read 6 of the 10--still hoping to get to War and Peace one of these days. Atlas Shrugged I abandoned after getting halfway through it--I am not an Ayn Rand fan. I only read Little Women a few years ago, but have since become quite a Louisa May Alcott fan.

I've been enjoying reading people's lists of hyped misses.
