NOVA this week (August 1, 2015)

Observations from my weekly wanderings, usually in Northern Virginia (NOVA), but since nova means “new” you could also take it to mean new this week.

And the pic is just a really sweet 65 Chevy NOVA.

Hope you caught the Blue Moon last night, and got done all those things you do only once in a blue moon. The next one won’t be until January 2018. It also happened to be a Super Moon last night, or a Super Blue Moon – double treat.

Scripture from this week’s reading of The One Year Chronological Bible (NIV): He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

This is my favorite Bible verse. I have many favorites, but this is THE FAVORITE. So, I can’t quote it without adding my thoughts. It’s a simple formula for life. It’s about me – act justly: I should do what’s right. It’s about how I relate to others: love mercy: I should be forgiving of others when they don’t do right. It’s about my relationship with God – walk humbly with My God.

It is my tendency to get the first two backwards. I want to be forgiven, or better yet accepted faults and all, but I am very quick to demand others act justly and treat me right. But when I have them backwards – life is frustrating, because I don’t get them my way. When I get them in God’s good order – life is very peaceful, because they are both within the ability of my freewill to make them happen.

And to walk humbly with my God? We are told that pride is a virtue, but I’ve found that it is an insidious little evil and destroyer of relationships. The solution? When I walk with God, how can I be anything but humble?

Random Quotation of the Week: Things are the way they are now, more than they ever have been before. ~ Gerald R. Ford

You can’t argue with that.

Excerpt from my current read, a magnificent description of a hangover:  Dixon was alive again. Consciousness was upon him before he could get out of the way; not for him the slow, gracious wandering from the halls of sleep, but a summary, forcible ejection. He lay sprawled, too wicked to move, spewed up like a broken spidercrab on the tarry shingle of the morning. The light did him harm, but not as much as looking at things did; he resolved, having done it once, never to move his eyeballs again. A dusty thudding in his head made the scene before him beat like a pulse. His mouth had been used as a latrine by some small creature of the night, and then as its mausoleum. During the night, too, he’d somehow been on a cross-country run and then been expertly beaten up by secret police. He felt bad. ~ Narrative from Lucky Jim

New vocabulary from my current read:
Soporific: causing sleep or sleepiness
Imbroglio: complicated dispute

Other thoughts: I think the Coca Cola bottling company is making a big mistake. I had to drink Pepsi four times this week because I couldn’t find a Joe or Joseph bottle. I cheated once with one that read Joel, but the guilt was too much. I won’t do that again.

  1. I quite like the Coke bottles because I like to match them to things I love to read or watch. So far this summer I've had Vic (as in Morrow, star of my fave TV show Combat!), Rudy (as in Valentino), Shane (as in the book and movie), and Patrick (as in Stewart). And my son found me one with my name and insisted I get one of those too, so I did, even though I felt silly sharing a Coke with myself.
