March 8: Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don't Get or Ten Characters I LOVE But Others Seem To Dislike

I’m gonna go halfsies and change it up just a little

Five characters whom many people like, that I just don’t get…or just plain dislike:

Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby
Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye
Don Quixote from Don Quixote
Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights

Five characters whom I love, who don’t get enough love:

Faramir from The Lord of the Rings
I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.
Alyosha smiled softly “God will conquer!” he thought.
Starbuck from Moby Dick
Moby Dick's no devil; he's a whale, a monstrous big whale aye, but a whale no more. And we're whaling men no less. We do not turn from whales, we kill em.
Lady Jessica from Dune
How seductive it is to live in peace
Denver from Beloved
The job she started out with, protecting Beloved from Sethe, changed to protecting her mother from Beloved.

    1. Yeah...I can somtimes get over not liking a character to still like the book, but in this case not so much. Still glad I read it.

  3. I don't get the attraction to Heathcliff either. He's mad crazy and also very vindictive.

    1. Yeah...he's just...tragic lover...NOT. He doesn't know the meaning of the word love.

  4. Gatsby and Heathcliff are awful! I automatically can't trust anyone who says that they love them :p

Faramir though, man. I wish he had a much bigger role! I love him a lot :)

  6. Gatsby, Holden and Heathcliff are awesome, but I can see why many don't like them. Although anyone who enjoyed Moby Dick and Beloved definitely has different reading tastes than me! But it's nice to see more people reading the classics!

  8. Amen to Heathcliff. And you might as well through Cathy in with him. Those two deserved each other. Faramir...I believe I've been in love with him for about 30 years. I think he's my favorite character from LOTR, and what the movie did to him made me so mad. And at the risk of offending everyone, (said quietly and ducking behind my chair just in case), I never really liked Sam.

    1. Yep...Peter Jackson captured everyone else so well, I really don't know what he was thinking when it came to Faramir.

  9. Thank you! Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who dislikes Holden Caulfield. I think he needs a good slapping.
