Man does not appear to me to be intended to enjoy felicity so unmixed; happiness is like the enchanted palaces we read of in our childhood, where fierce, fiery dragons defend the entrance and approach; and monsters of all shapes and kinds, requiring to be overcome ere victory is ours. ~ Edmond Dantes
Excerpt from my current read: The Count of Monte Cristo
(remember, it's a quotation, not a quote)
You have convinced me to attempt to remember the difference between quote and quotation. Your relentlessness on that point is to your credit. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to be a curmudgeon on the topic. It's just a word I'm fussy about. I don't expect everyone to concur. I once wrote an essay on the topic. http://100greatestnovelsofalltimequest.blogspot.com/2014/12/move-stars-and-let-bears-be.html
DeleteOhhhhhhhhhh, how I love this book.
ReplyDeleteMe too. It's been over 30 years since my first read, so I wasn't certain I'd love it as much...but so far I am. It MAY be my #1 all-time favorite when I'm done. (it almost hurts me to say so as Prof Tolkien's #1 fan, but MAYBE). Stay tuned.
DeleteIt's been my #2 favorite for years. Next time I re-read it, it might top Jane Eyre even, who knows?
