August 30: Back to School Freebie - anything "back to School"

This isn't really "back to school" but rather simply Top Ten Novels in a school setting

1. Lucky Jim – The original campus novel

2. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

That’s it; that’s the whole list. Unless I expand to novels partially in a school setting.

3. Lord of the Flies – bit of a stretch, but certainly the boys were being evacuated from a British school

4. Invisible Man

5. Brideshead Revisited

6. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

7. Of Human Bondage

8. The Catcher in the Rye

9. Vanity Fair – it’s been a while, and I think very little, just the first part of the first chapter takes place in school, but it is a formative and shared experience of several of the main characters

I was about to stop; I didn’t have any more in my reading experience. But even though I haven’t read it, I think an obvious addition should be:

10. The Harry Potter series

    Oh Harry Potter is ALWAYS on these sorts of school lists, right?!? 😂 It truly is the best fictional school out there!! And I'd like to read Lord of the Flies someday!

    j.i.m. stewart's "staircase" quintet...? the cognomen is the real name of michael innes, well-known author of the inspector appleby mystery series. the quintet takes place, over five separate books, in oxford... i liked it...

    I recently read Lucky Jim. I think Amis is one of the funniest writers out there.

      Yep...Lucky Jim is great fun. Kingsley's son Marting Amis however...not so much IMO.

    Does his son write fiction? I've only read some of his op eds in the Wall Street Journal.

      Yep...Martin Amis, best known novel: Money. It's dark humor, and a little reminiscent of his father, but I can't recommend it.http://100greatestnovelsofalltimequest.blogspot.com/2016/01/money-by-martin-amis-65-down-35-to-go.html

    Yes, we first meet Becky Sharpe when she is in school. And yes, HP is now the definitive fictional school. I always think of A Separate Peace when think of school setting fiction, and Donna Tartt's The Secret History. And then there's David Copperfield (where he meets Steerforth) and Nicholas Nickleby, and Jane Eyre's infamous Lowood School. I love school setting novels! Can you tell? :)
