What is your favorite seasonal/Christmas/holiday classic? Why?
Oh well, that’s easy. But to keep you in suspense, I will make honorable mention first to The Gift of the Magi, by O Henry. I like O Henry to start with, and The Gift of the Magi is his masterpiece.
But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.
But apart from THE Christmas Story, according to St. Luke, my favorite Christmas story is easily, The Story of the Other Wise Man by Henry VanDyke, wherein the hero of the tale, Artaban, finds failure that is better than success. It is a luminous gem; READ IT!
May you be blessed with
the spirit of the season, which is Peace,
the gladness of the season, which is Hope,
and the heart of the season, which is Love
Fine print disclaimer most will not notice: The original wording of the meme, as taken from The Classics Club site, used the imperial spelling “favourite” but in deference to ME, the new world proprietor of this blog, I have Yankified the spelling to “favorite”. Not sorry.
.
Our homeschool memory work for December is The Christmas Story, according to St. Luke. While I do give parts to the children, I think they all eventually have it mostly memorized, especially as this is the second time we've done it. While we don't normally use the KJV, we do with this account because, I guess it just seems so much more beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYes...I do love KJV for certain passages, birth of Christ especially.
DeleteYes sir ! Added it to my TBR, sir ;)
ReplyDelete:) Joyeux Noël
DeleteThank you, Joseph 😊 I hope you had a merry Christmas, blessed with love, peace and joy too! 🙏🌟🎄 Except for the nativity verses in the Gospel of Luke (my favourite gospel), I haven't read any of these, but it sounds like I should!
ReplyDeleteHere are my favourite festive reads: https://thebookwormchronicles.wordpress.com/2020/12/25/%f0%9f%8f%9b-the-classic-meme-2-0-merry-christmas-festive-classics-%f0%9f%8e%84%f0%9f%8c%9f%e2%9d%a4/ 🙂
You definitely should...they are both quite short, easily read in an hour or less. Merry Christmas!
DeleteI loved The Other Wise Man but I cried nearly all the way through it while trying to read it aloud to my kids.
ReplyDeleteI get choked up reading it silently. I don't know if I could read it aloud, especially to children. Such a beautiful story.
