The Classics Club Spin #18

I’ve been a member of The Classics Club for years now, but I’ve never participated in a club spin – due to my self-imposed and inflexible reading schedule (My Quest).

But I completed My Quest last month, so it’s time I finally played along. If you don’t know how the spin works, check it out HERE – and ya know, join in, and/or join the club, because if you haven’t well…why not?

My 20 Classics for the Spin:

1. Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote
2. The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens
3. The Idiot by Dostoevsky
4. Watership Down by Richard Adams
5. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
6. Candide by Voltaire
7. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
8. Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay
9. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
10. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
11. Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor
12. The Adventures of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
13. Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth
14. Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach
15. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë

  1. Part of me thinks the spin looks like fun, and part of me refuses to relinquish control over choosing what I read next ;-) Good for you for trying it out!

    2. You're gonna try to FIX a Classics Club spin? You do realize they're called Classics CLUBbers for a reason, right? I mean, maybe you don't value your kneecaps like I value mine...

      ;-)

    1. It'll be a reread if that one comes up...I really liked it the first time, but knew I'd need a reread.

  3. Welcome to your very first Spin Joseph - lovely to have you on board!
I read Breakfast at Tiffany's last year - it was very hard to not have the movie in my head.

We share Watership Down at #4 :-)

    1. Fortunately, I haven't seen the movie. I'm looking forward to reading it soon, spin or not. Actually, Watership Down is what I'm most hoping comes up (so, *nudge* *wink*...make it happen).

  4. I wish you get no. 15 or 19. No.15 because it's my latest favorite, no. 19 because I'd like to know your thoughts on it before I read it. :)
Have fun with the spin, anyway!

    1. Dickens has never let me down...but I'm split on the Bronte sisters, Emily and Charlotte. Anne will break the tie.

  5. Good luck with your first spin. I love Watership Down, A Tale of Two Cities and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, so I hope you get one of those. I also enjoyed Last Horizon when I read it last year...if that one comes up for you, I will be reading another James Hilton book, Goodbye Mr Chips, which is at the same number on my list.

    1. I read Lost Horizon when I was very young (maybe 12), I have no idea what made me read a book like that, but I remember being stunned by it. I'm anxious to see if it is as powerful now.

    1. I'll do my best...but generally I think I comprehend about 10% of Dostoyevsky's deeper meaning.

  7. A Tale of Two Cities and Candide were two of my favorite books when we read them in high school. I wonder how they would hold up in my mind so many years later!
