Top Ten School Books (Top Ten Tuesday, August 20, 2016)

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

August 30: Back to School Freebie - anything "back to School"

This isn't really "back to school" but rather simply Top Ten Novels in a school setting

1. Lucky Jim – The original campus novel

That’s it; that’s the whole list. Unless I expand to novels partially in a school setting.

3. Lord of the Flies – bit of a stretch, but certainly the boys were being evacuated from a British school

9. Vanity Fair – it’s been a while, and I think very little, just the first part of the first chapter takes place in school, but it is a formative and shared experience of several of the main characters

I was about to stop; I didn’t have any more in my reading experience. But even though I haven’t read it, I think an obvious addition should be:

10. The Harry Potter series

.

  1. Oh Harry Potter is ALWAYS on these sorts of school lists, right?!? 😂 It truly is the best fictional school out there!! And I'd like to read Lord of the Flies someday!

Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

  3. I recently read Lucky Jim. I think Amis is one of the funniest writers out there.

    1. Yep...Lucky Jim is great fun. Kingsley's son Marting Amis however...not so much IMO.

  4. Does his son write fiction? I've only read some of his op eds in the Wall Street Journal.

    1. Yep...Martin Amis, best known novel: Money. It's dark humor, and a little reminiscent of his father, but I can't recommend it.http://100greatestnovelsofalltimequest.blogspot.com/2016/01/money-by-martin-amis-65-down-35-to-go.html

  5. Yes, we first meet Becky Sharpe when she is in school. And yes, HP is now the definitive fictional school. I always think of A Separate Peace when think of school setting fiction, and Donna Tartt's The Secret History. And then there's David Copperfield (where he meets Steerforth) and Nicholas Nickleby, and Jane Eyre's infamous Lowood School. I love school setting novels! Can you tell? :)
