Top Ten Tuesday (February 9, 2016)

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

February 9: Valentine's Day is next week...let's do a Valentine's Day themed freebie! Top Ten Books That Would Make Great Valentine's Day Reads (or anti-Valentine's day reads), Top Ten OTPs, Top 10 fictional crushes, top ten great love declarations in fiction, swoony quotes from books etc. Get creative!

I think this would qualify as anti-Valentine, because these are my Top 10 worst mismatches, ill-fated, or just plain annoying matches. In no particular order except for #1… because…Blech! Heathcliff doesn’t know the meaning of the word Love and Catherine is just a fool.

10.  Hester Prynne and Rev Arthur Dimmesdale from The Scarlet Letter
9.   Philip Carey and Mildred from Of Human Bondage
8.   Sara Woodruff and Charles Smithson from The French Lieutenant’s Woman
7.   Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind
·                                  Or Scarlett and Ashley
6.   Anna Karenina and Count Vronsky from Anna Karenina
5.   Charles Ryder and Julia Flyte from Brideshead Revisited
4.   Winston Smith and Julia from 1984
3.   Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley from The Sun Also Rises
2.   Don Quixote and the Dulcinea from Don Quixote
1.  Heathcliff and Catherine from Wuthering Heights

  2. What a great idea for a Top Ten Tuesday list! These are definitely some bad pairings. Anna and Vronsky, Cathy and Heathcliff... terrible couples who just manage to make each other miserable.

  4. Ha, ha...these are perfect. Except I think Scarlet and Rhett were THE PERFECT MATCH, if they hadn't been so blind and selfish and had bad timing. That's what was so frustrating!

    1. I agree completely...they fell under my "annoying matches" category. They were perfect for each other...they just kept screwing it up by the numbers.

  6. I totally agree with GWTW and Wuthering Heights! I'm usually in the minority so I'm very glad to see someone else with the same opinion :) My TTT

  7. Ha! Love your list. I'm just starting The French Lieutenant's Woman so I'll have to see whether I agree with your assessment.

Heathcliff and Cathy are annoying, but made for each other, in my opinion. And Scarlett and Ashely? That would be the worst couple ever!

    1. Thanks...I won't comment further, to spare the spoiler for the French LT's Woman.

  8. Haha this was a hilarious take on the Valentines Day theme! I haven't read all the books referenced, but of those I have I agree 100%! Hester Prynne and Dimmesdale is literally illogical in my opinion. Scarlett and Ashley too. Scarlett and Rhett though... they were definitely messed-up but if Scarlett had gotten her act together a little earlier, they would probably have been a sucesss.
