My Favorite Classic - The Classics Club Monthly Meme (May 2018)

I’m very happy The Classics Club is reviving the monthly meme and I have to admit that the topic makes sense – it’s an obvious starting place to reboot the meme – But seriously?

What is your favorite classic book? Why?

You might as well ask which of my children is my favorite. Yes, I know that is not a very original phrase. I’m just reusing it because it makes the point so perfectly.

I just can’t.

But I want to support the return of the Monthly Meme, so I’m going to make an honest effort. For starters, I’ve given nine novels 5 Stars: The Grapes of Wrath, Lord of the Flies, The Lord of the Rings, To Kill a Mockingbird, Gone With the Wind, David Copperfield, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Little Prince

I don’t give out 5 Stars easily, so I thought all these deserve mentioning. However, in my opinion, THE BEST of these Best are:

The Grapes of Wrath
Lord of the Flies
To Kill a Mockingbird
Gone With the Wind

Now it gets very hard. If asked, I might name any one of these at any given moment, but I think the one that would most often come to mind – To Kill a Mockingbird.

Why? It made me cry; it made me laugh. It filled me with rage; it filled me with hope. It moved my emotions to every extreme and it made me think. More than that – you may read my review. It isn't necessary to point out that in the review, I name The Lord of the Rings as my favorite; I’ve already confessed to being somewhat fickle on this subject.

So I did it. Now what is your favorite classic?

  1. I've only read 4 of your top nine, but I chose one as my favorite - The Count of Monte Cristo.

  2. I can't argue with that choice. Thanks for dropping by Carol.

  3. Exactly the same reason I still couldn't work out this meme...how could I possibly pick one favorite?! To Kill a Mockingbird is in my list too, but maybe (just maybe) I'd pick Zola's Germinal. Or The Great Gatsby. See... I just can't... :)

    1. Yeah...it's too difficult. And now for something completely different...if you've ever seen a response from me to you, only it said Fanta...that's because my English settings in blogger autocorrect Fanda to Fanta (a brand of soft drink in the U.S.) I do know your name...I just don't always catch the incorrect autocorrection. Technology's wonderful...most of the time. Cheers

  4. I agree, it is impossible to chose just one! Even a top ten would be difficult. Of those you listed, I would pick David Copperfield because I love Dickens so much.

    1. I love Dickens too, and although DC is considered his greatest (I think it's because it is semi-autobiographical, and he said it was HIS favorite), I actually like A Tale of Two Cities better, but I haven't read it since I started blogging, so I didn't list it among my five star reviews. It will be there someday.

  5. To Kill a Mockingbird is an honorable choice. I cannot say what my favorite favorite is. There are just too many lovely classics out there. But like you, I can do a list. I would agree w/ Gone With the Wind. I would add Pride and Prejudice, A Christmas Carol, and Anna Karenina, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and All Quiet on the Western Front. :)

And kudos to you for restraining yourself from giving out 5 stars. Sometimes it is just too difficult to say no.

  7. I am currently reading The Lord of the Rings for the very first time and I'm loving it! The only one I've read from your list is The Little Prince but that was so long ago that I wouldn't know whether I would rate it five stars or not.
I'll take your words for To Kill a Mockingbird and every other title in your list :)

  8. Picking one favorite is impossible, but I can't argue with your choice--TKaMB is a national treasure.

  9. It's very hard to go past Too Kill A Mockingbird, it's certainly in my top 5, but Persuasion is still my all-time favourite.

I was delighted to see the return of the monthly meme even though it took me 2 months to answer it....and now the BIG news from the moderators!

    1. Yeah...I'm a bit bummed about the mods at The Classics Club. I don't blame them at all, but I'm sad to lose them. They've done a great job.
